143.5 Centimeters of Love

"I apologize for not being as direct as the two previous speakers, but I nevertheless have something to say. I went to a train station today and learned that the distance between railway tracks is always 143.5 centimeters, or 4 feet 8.5 inches. Why this absurd measurement? I asked my girlfriend to find out and this is what she discovered. When they built the first train carriages, they used the same tools as they had for building horse-drawn carriages. And why that distance between the wheels on carriages? Because that was the width of the old roads along which the carriages had to travel. And who decided that roads should be that width? Well, suddenly, we are plunged back into the distant past. It was the Romans, the first great road builders, who decided to make their roads that width. And why? Because their war chariots were pulled by two horses, and when placed side by side, the horses they used at the time took up 143.5 centimeters.

"So the distance between the tracks I saw today, used by our state-of-the-art high-speed trains, was determined by the Romans. When people went to the United States and started building railways there, it didn't occur to them to change the width and so it stayed as it was. This even affected the building of space shuttles. American engineers thought the fuel tanks should be wider, but the tanks were built in Utah and had to be transported by train to the Space Center in Florida, and the tunnels couldn't take anything wider. And so they had to accept the measurement that the Romans had decided was the ideal. But what has all this to do with marriage?"

I paused. Some people were not in the slightest bit interested in railway tracks and had started talking among themselves. Others were listening attentively, among them Marie and Mikhail.

"It has everything to do with marriage and with the two stories we have just heard. At some point in history, someone turned up and said: When two people get married, they must stay frozen like that for the rest of their lives. You will move along side by side like two tracks, keeping always that same distance apart. Even if sometimes one of you needs to be a little farther away or a little closer, that is against the rules. The rules say: Be sensible, think of the future, think of your children. You can't change, you must be like two railway tracks that remain the same distance apart all the way from their point of departure to their destination. The rules don't allow for love to change, or to grow at the start and diminish halfway through - it's too dangerous. And so, after the enthusiasm of the first few years, they maintain the same distance, the same solidity, the same functional nature. your purpose is to allow the train bearing the survival of the species to head off into the future: your children will only be happy if you stay just as you were - 143.5 centimeters apart. If you're not happy with something that never changes, think of them, think of the children you brought into the world.

"Think of your neighbors. Show them that you're happy, eat roast beef on Sundays, watch television, help the community. Think of society. Dress in such a way that everyone knows you're in perfect harmony. Never glance to the side, someone might be watching you, and that could bring temptation; it could mean divorce, crisis, depression.

"Smile in all the photos. Put the photos in the living room, so that everyone can see them. Cut the grass, practice a sport - oh, yes, you must practice a sport in order to stay frozen in time. When sport isn't enough, have plastic surgery. But never forget, these rules were established long ago and must be respected. Who established these rules? That doesn't matter. Don't question them, because they will always apply, even if you don't agree with them."

This American Life: Prom

This past weekend's episode of the NPR radio program This American Life was about the great American highschool tradition, prom. It was an interesting episode with four acts: about a prom night in a Kansas small town, when it was hit by a deadly tornado; an interview with an author of books for teenagers; a radio documentary-style recording of a prom night of a Chicago highschool; and finally, about prom at a highschool in Racine, Wisconsin which is taking American prom to a whole new level. You can listen to the full episode here.

In Indian highschools, at least in Bangalore where I went to school, we have something called "send-off party" and/or "class socials". "Send-off party" is a farewell party given to the out-going class by their immediate one-year junior class. "Class socials" as I understand it, is a party which the out-going class has exclusively for themselves. In some schools, they have both. In some, they have one or the other. In any case, the parties in Indian highschools are real benign affairs compared to the American prom which sounds like a real high-pressure act.

The prom is supposedly a formal dance party held in the school. Ergo, you need to go to it with a dance partner or risk being merely a second-class participant. That is pressure number 1 - to hook up with a suitable dance partner for the prom. I can imagine the number of proposals for prom dates, rejections and dejections which fly across American highschools from coast to coast during prom season.

But prom night doesn't end with taking a date out to dance in the school auditorium. The more thrilling adventures of traditional prom are what happens during the after-prom - the hours that start right after prom at school upto the early hours of next morning:

1. Doing something cool involving alcohol and/or drugs. How can prom be complete without getting wasted and/or high? That is pressure number 2 for the kids.
2. The final pressure number 3, of course, is to get laid on prom night. I hear and read that many kids these days have had sex well before prom. But that doesn't matter. It is the great American coming of age tradition to get laid on prom night!

I don't know about you, but I think that's a lot of pressure on American teenagers for one night. I'm glad I did not have to go through such an experience... Although I can imagine that for an American highschool kid who manages to have the full prom experience of dancing with the best girl of his choice, getting thoroughly wasted with his friends, and getting laid with his best girl, life must seem perfect. At least for that one night.

Tax Filing Tips

It is tax filing season again. I have only two tips for the typical tax-payer:

1. File your tax yourself. Use a program like TurboTax Deluxe or H&R Block TaxCut Premium to file yourself.

2. Do not e-file. File your tax returns by paper.

File Yourself

If you are filing taxes as an individual or a married person or a small business owner, you can and should try filing yourself. Professional accountants charge anywhere from 70 bucks to several hundred bucks to do your taxes. There is absolutely no need to waste your money on them. I paid hundreds of dollars to accountants to file my taxes for the past several years. I used TurboTax for the past couple of years and have been amazed at what a breeze it is to do your taxes yourself. I was able to do my taxes in just a couple of hours, one evening. I am never going to use an accountant again, unless I am so super rich, I don't know the value of my wealth myself. The cost of the TurboTax software was little over 35 bucks in Costco. With a $15 rebate coupon that Costco sent me earlier this year, the cost of filing my taxes was well under $24! What a sweet deal! And that included the cost of postage to send my filing papers, which brings us to the next topic...

File by paper. Do not e-file.

E-filing taxes in the US is nothing but a rip-off. Depending on which company you e-file through, expect to spend anywhere from 25 to 35 bucks or more for e-filing. That is disgusting! It should be cheaper to e-file than to file through paper. Read my full rant about e-filing costs in last year's post: Why should e-filing of US taxes cost more? As long as people continue to pay such ridiculously unreasonable amounts for e-filing, companies will keep ripping us off. It is high time all the US taxpayers say a collective 'NO' to paying such high amounts for e-filing. So, don't e-file. File early and send your filing by paper. This year, I mailed my tax papers on 8th Feb. My state refund was available in my bank account on 21st Feb and my federal refund on the 26th.

Happy filing everybody.

Suggestions for Bangalore Metro Rail

I recently came across an article which said that the Bangalore Metro Rail is soliciting suggestions from the general public for the train station design. I sent them the following suggestions. You too can email them your suggestions: bmrcl@dataone.in.

Suggestions for the train stations:
  • Please design every train station so that people are encouraged to follow queue system. This is especially necessary for buying tickets.

  • Please install 2 to 4 automatic ticket vending machines at every station. These machines should be able to accept cash and credit cards.

  • Please encourage local artists & poets to design decorations for the stations. They can design benches, shades, wall decorations, posters with short poems, etc. Please don't cover every available part of the station with commercial advertisements only.

  • Please also design major stations to have LCD screens which show:
    1. Train and bus time-tables.
    2. A dynamic map of Bangalore (similar to Google maps) showing the location of all trains and major buses in real time, using GPS technology.

  • Please install security cameras at all the railway stations. These cameras should record 24 X 7. Recordings more than one week old can be erased.

  • Please also design 'park and ride' type of train stations, especially near out-lying areas. These should be stations which provide ample and secure parking place for people to park their vehicles there and use the train to commute. If necessary, these parking areas can be restricted to people who use the train daily - employed people and students.

Suggestions for the trains themselves:
  • Please install security cameras INSIDE the train compartments. These cameras should also record 24X7. Impose strict fines and penalties on anybody who damages or defaces train property.

  • Please design a maintenance center where EVERY train compartment will be washed and cleaned EVERYDAY, both INSIDE and OUTSIDE. Please don't allow the compartments to gather dirt like the Indian railways trains.

I hope Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation is seriously looking into these and similar suggestions from the general public. I hope at least a few of these will be implemented.

Wipro BPO's employee in Pune is raped and murdered

Came across a gruesome piece of news this evening. Not able to get it out of my head.

Edited on 12/13/2012 with the following note: The original version of this article contained partial quotes from the below linked articles with proper link attribution. I consider this fair-use and not scraped content as defined by Google. Yet, Google informed me that this violates their policies. Therefore, I removed the quoted portions of the articles. You can read the full articles from the links below.

Wipro staffer raped, killed in Yahoo! News

BPO shocker exposes lapses in Telegraph India

Wipro cabbie not new to crime, say cops in Times of India

BPO cabbies' profiles not checked in Times of India

This news is particularly chilling for us (myself and thousands of other Indians) because we have female siblings, relatives and friends who work in Indian tech industry, travelling at odd hours in cabs and rickshaws. Just like the boyfriend of the victim in this latest incident, we have been on the phone with our relatives and friends, while they travelled to or from their offices at odd hours. It is all too easy to imagine the worst happening to our near and dear ones...

It is not just the female employees who are in danger. Just this morning, I read several reports of male employees of tech companies in Bengalooru being assualted, kidnapped and murdered for their money. Some of these incidents involved crimbes by drivers of cabs for the companies of the victims.

In Dec 2005, when writing about another rape and murder incident of a BPO employee in Bangalore, I had quoted Wipro's measures to ensure the safety of their employees as a good example of what should be done. Ironically, this latest incident has happened despite those measures being in place. Rules and processes are only as good as how well they are practiced.

Being a tech industry insider I know that not all rules and processes are followed - this includes even the processes that are part of our core work. Over a period of time, things become lax, omissions and errors creep in. Every company's management is aware of this. As such, Wipro (and other companies) should have more stringent reviews and audits in place to ensure that the rules which affect the physical security of their employees should be practiced with no lapses.

I know that the rules governing the security of the office locations, gates, access to certain areas, cameras inside the office, etc. are very stringently practiced in Wipro. So, it is difficult to understand how in the matter of employee's physical safety, there could have "been a criminal manipulation of our processes", as admitted by T K Kurien, Wipro BPO's president himself.

But I am not blaming the company alone. Every individual also has a responsibility to be extra vigilant and take precautions for personal safety. The lamentable and ineffective state of law enforcement and judicial system in India makes criminals incredibly brazen, almost to the point of being stupid. Yet, they get away with their crimes more often than not, which is what makes them so brazen and reckless. In such an atmosphere nobody can afford to be careless when it comes to personal safety.

The perpetrators of this crime should get the most stringent punishment and hope they get it soon. The criminal of the 2005 rape and murder case in Bengalooru I referred to earlier, has still not been sentenced, while the trial proceedings drag on. This despite that case being pursued in a 'fast track' manner by the court system!

Hopefully, this incident makes everyone extra vigilant.

Voting is Compulsory in Australia!

Today I learnt from the Google Public Policy blog post on Australian elections that voting is compulsory in Australia for all eligible citizens!

To use a popular teenage phrase: I was like, WHOA!

And then, I wondered what happens if someone does not vote in Australia. A quick Google search brought up this helpful FAQ page from the Australian Electoral Commission. Apparently, they get fined in Australia if they don't vote:
What happens if I do not vote?
Initially the Australian Electoral Commission will write to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a reason for their failure to vote or pay a $20 penalty.

If, within 21 days, the apparent non-voter fails to reply, cannot provide a valid and sufficient reason or declines to pay the penalty, then prosecution proceedings may be instigated. If the matter is dealt with in court and the person is found guilty, he or she may be fined up to $50 plus court costs.

Wow! They should make voting compulsory in all democratic countries. I don't know what effect it would have ultimately, but it will definitely make those shady politicians work harder... at least on the campaign trail, in order to win over a larger number of more diverse citizens.

The voter turn-out right now is pathetic in most elections - both in the US and in India. (I am not familiar with the voter turn-out in other countries.) Even in the US Presidential elections, which garner great interest world-wide, the voter turn-out is remarkably poor - just around 50%. Check this link which lists the voter turn-out in every Federal election since 1960. The bold numbers occuring every 4 years correspond to the Presidential elections and they consistenly show around 50% voter turn-out!

Yes, that 50% is the total voter turn out - includes people who voted for both/all the contesting candidates and people whose votes were invalid for one reason or the other. What this means is that every President Of The United States is actually sent to the office by a small minority of people, compared to the total population of the country! So, a presidential candidate does not need to win over the majority of the citizens - he just has to concentrate on winning over just enough of the minority to beat his/her rival candidates! Is it any surprise that most Presidents don't really seem to work for the people? Is it any wonder that the American Democracy no longer seems to be of the people, for the people, by the people?

Non-evolution of Humans

Our external world is fast changing. Incredible changes happen in the world from year to year, decade to decade, century to century. Some of these changes are unimaginable for most people until they actually happen. These external changes, which are considered to be 'progress' and 'evolution', lull most of us humans into thinking that we are actually progressing or evolving as a species. That is a total illusion!

We may be evolving better or faster or easier ways of doing things - eating, sleeping, mating, travelling, entertaining ourselves, killing others. But, we are not evolving much at a personal level, as people, as a species.

When we read literary works that are a few years or decades old, a few centuries old (Shakespeare, for example) or even thousands of years old (ancient epics like the Mahabharatha or the Greek myths), we note that the human concerns and character, our desires and feelings, our actions and reactions have not changed much at all. In thousands of years, we have really not evolved much in terms of how our personalities are.

Our lack of evolution is amazing. And, when we consider that we are still fighting, hurting and killing one another, still starving for proper food in large pockets of the world, it is disappointing. And worst of all, when we see at a personal level that, we have still not mastered effective communication and sharing of love, control of anger and jealousy, avoiding hurting those who love us, sharing food and riches, successfully experiencing a content and nurturing romantic relationship, the non-evolution of humans is downright depressing.

If we measure inter-personal and intra-personal (i.e., in the mind of a single person) conflict and strife within all the species of the world, humans will probably be toppers. By that measure, we are probably one of the least evolved species - in terms of communication, personality, inter-personal relationship!

Candidates@Google: Ron Paul

Ron Paul is a Republican candidate hoping to be the next President of the United States. He calls himself a constitutionalist first. I have seen a few Internet videos of him speaking and I am pleasantly surprised. Among all the politicians - both American and Indian - I have seen so far, Ron Paul comes across as the one with the most sincere convictions and ideals. You will get no lame, empty sound-bytes or insincere, populist rhetoric from this guy. He is extremely articulate, and everything he says seem to be based on deeply held convictions and logical reasoning. Not only that, he has consistently stuck to his ideals in his entire political career - no contradictions, no compromises seem to appear in his political record.

No wonder that Ron Paul's popularlity is increasing phenomenally among younger Americans with diverse leanings - Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal. I don't agree with all his positions, but boy, is it refreshing to see a politician like Ron Paul in these times!

Seriously, if you care about who the next President of the United States will be, you should Google Ron Paul. Even if you don't care, just check out the video below of his interview at Google, to see why he is so different and important to present day America.

Lessons in Mistakes for Alpha Males

Making Mistakes
  • Everybody in the tribe makes mistakes. The Alpha Male might make a big mistake. He has big responsibilities, big authority, big power. So, it is natural for him to be in a position where he might make big mistakes.

  • The biggest mistake the Alpha Male can make is to think that he is a worse person because he made a big mistake. How big a mistake a person makes is not necessarily proportional to how bad a person he is. The Alpha Male must always remember that he made a big mistake because he is a big person with big responsibilities.

Admitting Mistakes
  • The Alpha Male must be brutally honest with himself in admitting his mistakes and the causes for the mistake. Admitting his mistakes to others is a different matter.

  • The Alpha Male must admit mistakes to others only if such admission is necessary for rectifying the mistake or for healing the hurts caused by his mistake or for teaching a lesson to others so that they don't make the same mistake. Otherwise, the Alpha Male should not admit mistakes to others.

  • The tribe does not follow the Alpha Male because he makes mistakes and admits to them. The tribe follows the Alpha Male because he corrects mistakes and takes the tribe forward.

  • While admitting the mistake might appear honest and honorable, most tribe members will see it merely as a weakness. It takes some maturity to recognize honor in the admission of mistakes, and most followers don't have that maturity.

Rectifying after Mistakes
  • The first step to rectifying a mistake is for the Alpha Male to remember that he is the Alpha Male. He is the Do-er of Things. He is the Fixer. He is not a smaller person or a bad person just because he made the big mistake.

  • Alpha Males can be hard on themselves, expecting to always do the best. So, when they make a mistake, they might spend time and energy brooding on it, beating themselves up. This is not productive. The Alpha Male should give only as much thought and energy to mistakes, as it is necessary to learn the causes and contributing factors of the mistakes, and learn what it takes to rectify the mistake.

  • The Alpha Male should not allow himself to be defeated just because he made a mistake. The mistake might prove that he is not the smartest or the strongest, but he is still the Alpha Male. He should not give up his power and authority to others just because he made a mistake.

  • If the Alpha Male is indeed broken or defeated by a mistake, and he is not able to correct it or lead the tribe, he should step down and let someone more capable take over. There is nothing more pathetic or dangerous than a person who is no longer the Alpha Male, but who is pretending to be one or trying to futilely to hold on to the title.

  • By all means let the Alpha Male listen to other wise members of the tribe for advice on correcting the mistake. But what he does with such advice is his own decision and responsibility. He should execute the rectifications with his own power, as his own actions. He should be careful not to give up his power and authority to those who advice him in the time of his defeat or mistake.

  • This is worth repeating: Mistakes and defeats do not make or break the Alpha Male. The Alpha Male is made or broken by what is in his heart, his head and in his balls.

Mistakes and Women
  • One of the worst mistakes the Alpha Male can make is one involving a woman - doing something wrong to her or doing something wrong with her or doing something wrong because of her. The Alpha Male should take special precautions not to mix up mistakes and women.

  • Most women follow the Alpha Male for the same reason the rest of the tribe does: because he is the Alpha Male, because he is the Do-er, the Fixer, the Leader. They admire and love him for the same reasons. Not because he makes mistakes or admits to them.

  • The Alpha Male might feel the need to have some person with whom he can let down his guard, freely admit his weaknesses and mistakes, be vulnerable. He must be careful about whom he chooses to do these with. Doing all these with a woman does not necessarily make him the cute love-able puppy to her.

  • The Alpha Male is better off having an older trustworthy mentor for letting down his guard, admitting his weakness and mistakes, and being vulnerable. Ideally, such a mentor is not a direct follower of the Alpha Male and is somewhat removed from the rest of the tribe.

  • There is a rare woman who can see every weakness of the Alpha Male, still recognize that he is the Alpha Male, support and help him to overcome those weaknesses, and love and respect him at the end of it all. The Alpha Male who has such a woman in his life is very lucky. Such a woman will be one of the main strengths which make him the Alpha Male.

Desi Frozen Food in Walmart

I don't know what took so long, but it had to happen eventually: desi frozen food had to make its appearance in American grocery stores.

I noticed the above two items - mattar panneer and palak panneer - in a local Walmart. Apologies for the quality of the pictures. They were taken in a hurry using my cellphone.

These were just two items. But this is still a start. Now, I can't wait for the day when Indian grocery items - spices, daals, etc. - will appear on the standard grocery store shelves.

There are very few Indian grocery stores in American cities. The problem is that the Indian merchants don't think big. They are too busy establishing and running small mom-and-pop type Indian grocery stories.

I wish some enterprizing businessman would instead supply Indian grocery, spices, frozen foods, etc. to national grocery food chains and convince them to sell them. Almost every big grocery store in the US has aisles dedicated to Hispanic and Chinese food. There is no reason why Indian items should not occupy some of that shelf-space. They are sure to sell well. They are good for the Indian suppliers, good for the grocery stores and good for us consumers. We don't have to buy goods with expired dates or dubious quality from the desi stores.

Avoiding Man Troubles

The following tips are for women who want to avoid troubles with men whom they don't want in their lives. Most women know several men whom they don't want in their lives, with whom they would like interaction to be zero or nil. I hope the following tips, from a man's perspective, will help them avoid troubles with such men.

The post starts with some introductory spiel and theoretical lecture about men and how they feel and think. I urge you to read it. If you don't want to wade through all that blah-blah, and want to get straight to the tips to avoid man troubles, click here.

The Streets, stories, strategies blog post and the comments on that post reminded me once again of the numerous and diverse strategies and tactics women use to avoid unwarranted attention and action from men. Most women pick up these tricks from their friends and older female relatives / acquaintances. Some of these are learnt through bitter and traumatic personal experience. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a course or institute to teach these skills and crafts to young girls who are growing up and venturing out into the big bad world. Of course, the fact that it is even necessary for women to know these tactics to protect themselves from the male members of their own species, is highly regrettable.

I am not writing this to share regrets or outrage or any other emotion. My intention is to share the simple and straight facts about the male psyche, in realistic and pragmatic terms. I think the fact that I am just another guy qualifies what I say below as coming straight from the proverbial horse's mouth.

There are times when I am amazed by the naivete among some women about matters concerning men. At other times, I am surprised by some of the opinions and theories that women in general, and feminists in particular, have about men. Given the fact that men and women have been together in the world for as long as they have existed, you would think that they know and understand each other well. Surprisingly, that doesn't seem to be the case. In my opinion, that makes humans one of the stupidest species alive... Only slightly better than the black widow spider's mate, who risks his life in order to copulate.

The purpose of the following material is to help women understand men better. A secondary purpose is to help women to avoid some of the troubles that men might present them with. I hope such understanding will lead to safer and healthier relationships - both romantic and otherwise. As mentioned before, I am being very realistic and pragmatic in what I write below. While writing the truth, I won't pander to any sensitivities or prejudices or social / moral expectations. I am not going to talk about whether something is right or wrong. I won't say how things ought to be. I just present how things simply are. I ask my readers - especially the feminine readers - to read this with an open mind. Remember, our objective here is to understand, not to pass judgments.

Disclaimer: As always, there are exceptions to what I say below. Obviously, all of the following are not true for all the men. And certainly, all of these are not true for me personally either. However, I believe that most of the following are true for the average young active male psyche. Your mileage and experience with a particular male specimen might vary.

The Male Libido

For the most part, the male libido is an involuntary function. Men don't have too much control over what or who will turn them on and who won't. If they feel it, they feel it. That's that. The only way to inhibit such involuntary function is through very deep, consistent conditioning. An example of such conditioning for most of us is to not have sexual feelings towards women who are closely related to us - our sisters, mother, aunts, etc. Other than such conditioning, there is not much a man can do about how he feels towards certain women. It is important to keep this in mind.

Women - especially younger ones - sometimes think that men (whom they don't like) are so wrong for simply feeling something towards them. They think that men have control over such feelings and should therefore regulate what they feel. I am telling you that for the most part, men don't have control over such feelings, and so they can't stop them.

Having said that, I should also mention here that men can and should control what they do about such feelings. They may not be able to do much about what they feel, but they should be able to regulate how they act on such feelings. The feelings may not be voluntary, but actions certainly are. Related read: "Is it my fault that I felt like kissing in the temple?"

The Male Purpose

The most deeply ingrained, instinctive, oldest male purpose is common for human males and countless other species: copulate as often as possible with as many females as possible. This is simply biological programming designed to increase the chances of survival of a species. Everything about a male's body and most things about his mind have evolved over centuries to achieve this goal.

Most things about our social rules and expectations today have evolved precisely in the opposite direction: to prevent a man from having indiscriminate sex with many women. Most people don't stop to consider what a humonguous and remarkable achievement this is. It is an achievement that undoubtedly has women's signature on it. Feminist types love to complain that it is still a man's world out there and that women are not getting what's due to them. Well, I have something to tell them: if society had evolved to purely serve the interests of men, it would be one big orgy party where men would play, drink and have sex as much as they wanted, with whoever they wanted.

Getting voting rights for women? Getting equal status for women? These are not big achievements compared to what women have already achieved in our society: getting a large number of sexually active men to live, walk, work in close proximity to a large number of women, in relative peace, harmony and decency; convincing most men that they should have just one mate at a time, preferably one mate for an entire lifetime. Considering that an average healthy male involuntarily thinks of sex once every few waking minutes or so, and he has several erections a day, and considering that his most deeply programmed instinct is to have sex as often as possible with as many women as possible, this is not a small achievement. It's humonguous and remarkable, alright!

While women did this, men have not been sitting idle. They constantly experience a struggle within themselves - a struggle between their instinctive biological urge and their desire/expectation to experience an ideal monogamous relationship. While this epic battle goes on within their selves everyday, they have come up with some complex, subtle, symbolic, stylized and remarkable ways of demonstrating their own worthiness to mate to the women they are interested in. These include sports, arts, finances, literature, etc. This has helped men explore and evolve other aspects of their personalities, than merely their balls and their strong arms.

This is as it should be. It balances things out between men and women. Any species can indulge in mere copulation with multiple partners. But the human monogamous relationship, enables us to experience more - a whole new range and depth of feelings, challenges, pleasures and pains in relationships, all of which (hopefully) help us live a more enhanced life experience.

To summarize: The male instinct for multiple and frequent sexual experiences is very strong and ingrained. In every man, there is a constant struggle between this biological instinct, and the psycho-social desires/expectations of experiencing an ideal monogamous relationship. Sometimes one instinct wins, sometimes the other does - in the same man, in one lifetime, sometimes even in one day!

The Mixed Signals

When things are simple, communication is simple. For species which just follow their simple biological instincts, signals and communications are simple, unambiguous. When we stop following our instincts, things get a little more complex. Our biology causes our body to behave in a certain way, our mind wants us to do something else. Result: mixed signals. Part of our mind wants to follow the body's needs, part of the mind wants to live as per the socially established norms. Result: mixed signals. Different people/genders want to follow their body's instincts to different extents. Result: mixed signals. Mixed signals lead to miscommunications and misunderstandings.

The mixed signals women give is one of the most frustrating things for men. I don't know if women are aware that they give mixed signals. Women - especially the younger ones - will quite often deny that they are doing so. But the effectiveness of communication is measured by how well the recipient understood it and acted on it. If a guy's understanding of a woman's signals are different from what she expected, the communication was not right somewhere.

Women are notorious for sending mixed signals. Some of the examples include: indulging in 'innocent flirting', trying to be 'just friends', going on dinner / drink / dance dates with men when they have no intention of taking the relationship any further ever, fishing for compliments from men, etc.

Women cannot be blamed for a lot of the mixed signals, though they are certainly guilty in some cases. A lot of times, mixed signals happen due to the complexity resulting from conflicting instincts and desires within the same person, and between the man and the woman.

For women, the most important key to avoiding man troubles, is to avoid sending mixed signals.

Avoiding Man Troubles

Disclaimer 1: Most of what I write below is limited to avoiding trouble with men who are known to women, with whom women have regular and/or frequent interaction. There is not much advice I can offer on avoiding trouble with strangers on streets, buses, trains, etc. except one: physically avoid them as much as possible; avoid being in close proximity to them; avoid drawing their attention. It depends on each individual woman and her circumstances to decide how much of this avoidance is possible, how such avoidance affects her life, etc.

Disclaimer 2: If you look at what is written below in its entirety, it may appear as if I am offering tips for a society which is totally segregated on gender. Not quite! This is just a list of tips for various situations. It is upto each woman to choose and use what is useful for her unique circumstances. I can't imagine any woman or situation needing all of the tips below. I certainly don't encourage any type of gender-based segregation or distance. There is enough of that already in the world.

Disclaimer 3: Several readers seemed to think that I am recommending the usage of the following tips with all men. It is definitely not so. These tips are only for those occasions when there is some guy, who seems to be interested in you, but you want to have nothing to do with him and you want to keep him off. In all other situations, in comfortable platonic relationships and even with neutral strangers, feel free to be your nice and friendly self.

Women can have unwanted trouble with men in all kinds of situations - with strange men as well as with familiar ones, on the street, in the work place, at home, in social situations, etc. Almost any place where men and women interact, there is potential for trouble. Most of these troubles can be avoided with some simple, pragmatic measures. One of the biggest reasons for trouble is sending mixed signals. A lot of the tips I offer below are designed to reduce or eliminate mixed signals.

  • Physical space and physical contact: Always be aware of the physical space between you and the undesired man, and keep a respectful distance. Avoid physical contact, if possible. Physical space and physical contact depend to a large extent on cultures. For example, in some cultures, a casual hug between a man and woman is not a big deal, where as in other cultures, there is no concept of a casual hug. So, be aware of your cultural context, keep the appropriate distance. Watch out for men who use the cultural difference to 'innocently' touch you (Shilpa Shetty & Richard Gere kissing controversy). Anytime there is accidental contact, apologize and draw back at once. This advice is easy to follow with strangers or acquaintances or even colleagues. But it is with friends that you should really tap into your feminine instincts and judgment: "When I touch this male friend's arm casually in the course of a conversation, is it a friendly touch or will he consider it as a woman's sensual touch?" You are the best person to judge.

  • Sharing a roof: This is another aspect of sharing the physical space with a man. Sometimes, you may end up sharing a roof with a man - as roommates or when staying over at a friend / relative's home. Needless to say, if you are not comfortable with a man and want to avoid him, don't stay in the same house as him. Not even for one night. When you do share the house with a man, it is even more important to be aware of the physical space. Absolutely do not share a bedroom, let alone a bed, unless you want to go all the way with the guy. Get a room with a secure bolt/lock, and close the door securely when you sleep or change. Try to have your own bathroom too, if possible. Avoid one-man-one-woman type of a living situation, if you can. It helps to have more roommates, at least one other girl in the house apart from you. Unless you are really brave and confident of handling the guys, don't end up in situations where there's more than one guy in the house and you are the sole girl, not even if one of the guys is your boyfriend or partner. It is worth repeating again what I said earlier: if you want to avoid troubles with a man, don't stay in the same house as him.

  • Dinner, drinks and dancing: In the modern world, dinner, drinks and dancing have become formal aspects of the courting/mating ritual. Unless you are open to possibilities with a guy, don't go out for dinner or drinks or dancing with him. Do not use a guy to buy you drinks and dinner, unless you are willing to put out for him. Even if the guy is a close friend, avoid these things... you'll have man trouble with a close friend, which are pretty bad things to go through. In fact, if you are not interested in a guy, you should avoid meeting him alone, if at all possible.

  • Meeting alone: If you are not interested in a guy, try not to meet him alone as much as possible. Sometimes meeting alone cannot be avoided. Nevertheless, there are many precautions you can take. Keep the meeting short and on topic. Avoid meeting alone in personal places like his or your home. Meet in public. If it's to be a meeting with a colleague or client have it in the office or conference room, rather than in a social setting such as a restaurant, if it's a guy you want to avoid. Do not have one-on-one meetings with colleagues or clients during your personal time. Meet during the day, rather than in the evening or night. This is another tip which needs to be used with extra judiciousness with male 'friends'.

  • Being friends with men: Talking of male friends, know that it is not easy for men to be friends with women. Remember that men's most basic instinct is to mate with you. Men may be interesting and fun company to hang out with, they may give you great advice, they may have an awesome sense of humor, they may be of much help to you - all the qualities you like in a good friend. But their strongest basic instinct prevents most men from being ideal friendship material. There is a popular saying among those who believe that friendship between men and women is simply not possible: "A male friend is a guy who does not know how to close". The "close" usually refers to: sexual consummation or to "fuck or fly" (have sex or break off the relationship and go away) or to "fuck and fly" (have sex and then break off the relationship). I know it sucks for many women that men can't be "just friends", but that is how it is. Now, I won't say that men and women should not be friends. But if a woman wants to be friends with a man, she should be very aware of the men's basic instinct at all times, be extra careful not to send mixed signals at any time, always be consistent in her behavior with him, not encourage any behavior or approach which is over-friendly or more than friendly, and basically follow all the tips in this section. Just don't let the guy think at any time that he might have a chance with you. And, if he does not play by the rules of friendship and tries to get too close, break off the friendship. Believe me, breaking off the friendship is much less painful than dealing with man troubles from someone you considered a friend. Just break it off. And for god's sake do not use him as an intellectual whore.

  • Intellectual whores: Do not use men as intellectual whores. You don't like it if men treat you as a physical whore, if they use you for only physical pleasure and then leave, if they don't show you proper emotional respect and value. So, why do you think men would like it if you used them for only your intellectual pleasure: their smart conversation, fun company, sane advice, timely help? This happens too often. I think, women use men intellectually more often than men use women for physical pleasure. Intellectual (and even physical) whoring might be okay if both the people want only that and nothing more. But that's not often the case. As I have said countless times already, a man's basic instinct is to have sex. Most guys who allow themselves to become your intellectual toy, are doing so with the hope that they will get a piece of your ass in return. Or your love. Or both. Believe me, it's as hurtful and bad when a woman treats a man as an intellectual whore, as it is when a man treats a woman as a physical whore. Don't do it. Men may be bad in a lot of ways, but they don't deserve to be used any more than you do. The only exception to this are cases where both people want the same thing - physical or intellectual give-and-take.

  • Innocent flirting: Now, there are many instances when women think that they are not using a man or anything of the sort, they are just flirting innocently. Well, for starters, there is no such thing as innocent flirting. All flirting is mental foreplay. Now, as a woman, you might be quite content with limiting yourself to the mental realms, but a man is not. A man always wants more. When you flirt with a man, he reads it as a signal of interest to get physical with him. Even in the rare situations when he does not read it as such, even in situations where you make it abundantly clear that you are only being funny and having mental fun, the man cannot control his feelings. Remember what I said earlier about his feelings being involuntary? A flirting woman is a siren call to a man's libido. So, unless you are really interested in a man and there is a possibility of things going further, don't flirt with him. And, don't let him flirt with you. Men's egos can be blind. For most men, your flirting with him is almost right up there with simply letting him flirt with you. If you just let him flirt without flirting back, he will think that you like his flirting and you like him! He will also think that you are just being coy or shy, and he will flirt more, trying even harder to get you to react to him. So, if you are not interested in the man, put an end to flirting, from both sides, period.

  • Seeking attention / affirmation: Sometimes women flirt, not for the fun of it, but because they are seeking attention or affirmation of their feminity. If they are not getting enough attention from their regular partners or even if they are getting the attention, but they are simply bored with it, they will seek it elsewhere. For women (and for men), compliments or attention from someone who is not their partner or who does not love them or who is not familiar to them, always has more weight. Now, it might be okay to seek or get this once in a while. But if you are doing this constantly, there is something wrong with your relationship and you should take care of that first. And, if you are doing this constantly with one guy, you are giving him signals that you are interested in him. So, unless you are really interested in him and you are willing to do something about it, don't fish for compliments or seek attention from a man. Doing so is a sure-fire way of attracting some massive man trouble. This also goes for giving him attention and compliments. This too is alright once in a while. But don't over-do it. In fact, if you really want to avoid a man, don't even laugh at his jokes!

  • Laughing at a man's jokes: A lot of people don't know this, but humor is one of the most effective courting tools. It is far easier to win someone's attention and affection with humor, than with any amount of intense and sincere declarations of love and passion. So, men do often use humor as a fishing hook with women. And humor is also one of the most effectively disguised tactics. Most women don't notice it. It flies right under their radar, they laugh and laugh at the guy's jokes and before they know it, they have a man on their hands. Yeah! What I just said might seem like too much of an exaggeration, right? Surely, laughing at someone's joke can't be so bad. If you don't believe me, read this: Laughter paves the way for romance. Convinced? Now, it may seem too restrictive to suggest that you not laugh at a man's jokes, and I am not suggesting that. Go ahead, laugh at a man's jokes. Just be aware of the possible effects and consequences. And more importantly, if you want to avoid a man or don't like him, just don't laugh at his jokes. He will get the signal. It's as simple as that.

  • Being a cocktease: Having talked of using a man intellectually, flirting, seeking attention, giving attention and laughing at a man's jokes, how can we not mention a cocktease? These are all typical tools of the trade for the cocktease. All I can tell a woman on this subject: Don't be a cocktease. If you are, you deserve every bit of man trouble that comes your way. Cuz, you are asking for it!

  • Relationship line crossing: One of the most common ways for most relationships to start is by crossing the lines of one relationship to another. A classmate crosses over to become a date, a friend crosses over to become a partner, a colleague crosses over... let's not go there! Crossing relationship lines is not bad in itself. But if you don't want to get in trouble with a man, it helps to be aware of the lines which define the relationship and not let him cross it. Men are instinctively programmed to cross lines - they have been crossing all sorts of lines for centuries, creating all kinds of problems. They do so in relationships also, always pushing, pushing, pushing to see how far they can go. If you don't want to have troubles with a man, just put an end to all pushing, decisively and effectively the first time he tries it. Simply don't let it happen. Noticing when he is trying to cross the line may not be very easy - many times it's disguised. Even more difficult to watch out for are the times when you might inadvertently cross the line sending the wrong signal. The most difficult to detect and stop is the crossing of relationship lines when a relationship ends. Suppose two people who were dating, decide to break it off. When they do that, they draw a line, a boundary, which neither person should ever cross. But in such situations, both people frequently cross the lines, causing confusions, mixed signals, and much hurt. Unless both of them want to give each other a second chance, they should be very careful not to cross any lines themselves or let the other person cross the lines. Post-breakup is the worst for mixed signals. And, mixed signals are so easy to give - sometimes a wrong signal could be sent merely by the clothes you wear!

  • Dressing with a purpose: This is so basic and something I should not have to tell women. But unfortunately, a lot of women can get this wrong. Just remember that it is not only important to look attractive in what you wear, it is also important to have a purpose to what you wear. Sure, you might look very attractive in a top which shows a lot of cleavage, but what is the purpose of wearing it to work? Do you really want to distract your male colleagues? Always be conscious of where you are going and what type of dress will be appropriate for the place and occasion. This is especially important if you are going to meet a guy alone - the way you dress sends very strong signals, even if he does not read them consciously, his instinctive libido will.

Those are the tips I could think of this morning. If I come up with more, I will update this post.

These tips are based on common-sense and my perceptions as a guy. They are based on how I feel guys think and behave, and how women can end up giving us mixed signals. The above tips will avoid your giving out mixed signals to guys and having some unwanted man trouble on your hands. I hope that you can choose them appropriately for your situation and use them effectively.

Now, if you are really looking for a man or trouble (is there a difference? :-)), by all means go ahead and good luck to you!

Why should e-filing of US taxes cost more?

Yesterday, about six weeks after I filed my taxes by mail, I got a letter from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) asking me to send them a couple of additional forms. These are forms which I had already sent with my original filing. The letter from IRS stated that:
The delay that has resulted from this request for additional information may have been avoided if you had electronically filed your tax return.

The implication here is that the additional forms I sent were lost in the paper shuffling process, something that would not have happened if I had filed electronically.

Well, I would be glad to file electronically. In fact, if something can be done electronically, rather than using paper, I make sure that I don't use the paper. There is a reason why I didn't file my taxes electronically: the US government, in all its wisdom, has decided that filing electronically should cost a whole lot more than filing with paper!

If you file your taxes through TurboTax software, filing electronically costs $34 for federal and state taxes combined. In contrast, filing by paper cost me only 78 cents postage! These costs are in addition to the cost of the TurboTax software itself - which is almost $40.

Now, why should e-filing cost more for the tax payer? Especially when it costs the government less to process electronic filings: $2.65 to process paper filings versus 29 cents for e-filings! Given this fact, you would think that the government would encourage people to e-file, giving them every incentive to do so. Instead, it allows corporations like TurboTax and H&R Block to charge exorbitant fees for e-filing.

This is a classic story of governmental screw-up, in conjunction with corporate greed. You see, the big accounting corporates persuaded the government not to allow direct e-filing by all the taxpayers, so that these corporates could e-file on our behalf and charge us exorbitant fees... ostensibly to maintain and operate the e-filing infrastructure! Disgusting!

Bollywood Dance goes 'Underground' in America?

Today, Yahoo! announced their latest initiative: Underground.

I checked out the website and was surprised to see a link at the bottom which read, "Bollywood". Getting very curious, I clicked on the link to discover that Bollywood dance competition for college students in America is considered to be part of the 'underground' scene here!

Do you Paypal?

Does small cash pass back and forth often or occasionally between your friends and you? Is this cash in any of these currencies? Do you live in any one of these countries and operate a bank account there? If you answered yes to all these questions, you should immediately sign up for Paypal.com. Go ahead and just do it. Seriously. And, get your friends to sign up also.

Warning: This is an unabashed and unpaid advertisement for Paypal.com.

Paypal is such an incredibly convenient free service, I don't know why more people don't use it. Suppose you go out for lunch with a friend and s/he pays the bill at the restaurant. Your share of the tab is $7.17 and you need to give this money to your friend. Now imagine that you have a personal secretary who will go out to the bank, withdraw the exact $7.17 from your checking account and pays it to your friend, without you writing a cheque or handling cash or dealing with the hassles of finding the exact change, without even your leaving the seat! In a similar vein, suppose your friend pays you a certain amount of cash and you want to deposit the money in your bank account. Imagine having a secretary who will get this money from your friend, then go out and deposit it into your bank account, without your having to fill out a deposit slip or leave the comfort of your home or office. To add more more fun to these imaginary scenarios, suppose that your friend is in another state or country, and you need to send money to her or get money from him. Imagine that this secretary's services include giving money to or getting it from this distant friend of yours, instantly, without any money orders or mailing of cheques or waiting periods involved. And best of all, imagine that the services of this secretary are absolutely free! Sounds too good to be true, eh? Yet, this is exactly what Paypal does for you.

Paypal is an online service to which anybody with an email address (and lives in these countries and does transactions in these currencies) can sign up. Then, you register your bank account information with Paypal. Soon after your bank account is registered and confirmed, you are in business. All you have to do is logon to Paypal.com to initiate withdrawals and deposits into your bank account, to and from anybody else who uses the Paypal service. And as long as the transactions are all personal (meaning, no buying and selling from or to the other party of the transaction) and the total amount of your transactions is within a certain limit, it's all free.

So, if I have to pay $7.17 to that friend who paid for my lunch, all I have to do is log on to Paypal.com and initiate a 'Send Money' transaction to my friend. The amount will be withdrawn from my bank account and sent to my friend's Paypal account. My friend can then have the money transferred from her Paypal account to her bank. Everything done online. Nobody handles cash or cheques, nor deals with trips to the bank or ATMs. It is as simple as that. Now you can even use the sms service of your cell phone to do Paypal transactions.

A sole bank-only transaction on Paypal takes about 2-3 business days, which is the same as depositing a cheque and waiting for it to cash. If the bank account registered with Paypal has a backup funding source such as my debit card, the transfer of funds is instant. As soon as I hit the send money button on Paypal.com, the money is transfered to my friend's Paypal account that very instant.

I have a bunch of friends with whom there is always some monetary transactions going on: somebody picked up the tab during a group lunch, somebody bought movie tickets to the whole group, somebody bought a group gift for someone's birthday. We need to pay money to all these different people. When there are anywhere from 5 to 20 people in the group, all those transactions can become a hassle when dealing with cash and small change. Getting so many cheques and depositing them is also a chore in itself. This is where Paypal is such a big convenience.

Whether you do small cash exchanges frequently or occasionally, give Paypal a try. You will definitely thank me for it.

Note: When I recommended Paypal to friends in the past, some of them expressed concerns about Paypal's security. All I can tell such people is that I have been using Paypal regularly for almost five years now, and I have never had any problems with their services or security. I have read about some phishing emails which were sent to Paypal customers. These emails looked like official emails sent from Paypal, but they were actually sent by some scammers who invited gullible people to click on a link and enter their Paypal login and password. The scammers were going to use this information to steal money from people's Paypal account. But then such emails have been targetted at Citibank, Wells Fargo (I personally received such a phishing email targetting Wells Fargo customers) and other banks' customers. The bottomline is that, signing up for Paypal's service does not make you any more vulnerable than doing online banking transactions with your traditional banks. As long as you are careful about what you do online, using Paypal is as safe as using your bank's website for online transactions. Probably, safer!

Hacking Democracy on Google Video

Last night I watched a remarkable documentary on Google Video, called Hacking Democracy. The documentary was telecast on HBO on Nov 2nd 2006, and here's the HBO Synopsis. You can play the documentary in the Google Video Player embedded above, or you can watch it here.

The United States of America is perhaps the country which sees the highest usage of newer computer technologies - software & hardware - at all levels, be it personal, private, public or government. It is not surprising that America would resort to new technology in its election process to record and tally thousands of millions of votes.

What is truly surprising, almost unbelievable, is the rotten system America uses to run its elections. A mix of hardware and software systems which suck big time, and an inefficient and corrupted bureaucracy which does not strictly follow due processes and regulations, have truly hijacked the 'greatest democracy in the world'. This kind of rot in any other aspect of American life, especially if it involved money, would have resulted in quick and highly publicized prosecutions. The responsible people would have been held accountable, heads would have rolled and asses would have been hauled off to prisons for very long stays. Most importantly, the system would have been reformed to put sufficient checks and balances in place to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. This is the America we have read about, come to know and respect. The America which is exposed by this documentary is a country where the most important and sacred democratic process, namely the election, has been corrupted quite blatantly and absurdly.

It all starts simply enough : a 'grandmother' (the documentary mentions this more than once) and writer named Bev Harris from Seattle, sets out to find out why her county acquired electronic touch screen voting machines and if they are reliable enough. When she is not satisfied by the answers she gets from the officials, she tries to find out more. From there, through the course of the documentary, she manages to uncover a rot which spreads across the country, from coast to coast. But the remarkable thing is that, the story remains consistently simple through the entire 80 minutes of the documentary. There is no evil mastermind bad guy at work, there is no clever and complex conspiracy which is hard to detect, there is no ingenius and daring moves by the good guys to catch and expose the bad guys. There is not even the terrorism and violence that goes with election corruption and hijacking in some countries.

It is all so absurdly simple and silly : Bev Harris is not some lady James Bond or a hot-shot investigative journalist. She is just a regular lady from next door, who is running around the country, with a camera following her, asking questions and accepting help from whoever offers to help. All she has to do is search the Net to find the "secret" software code behind the voting systems, the code which is not even shared with the government, and is discovered to have a lot of security holes in it; all she has to do is dig through the garbage of election officials to discover how they are not following the processes and the regulations as they are supposed to; all she has to do is let loose a couple of techies on the new voting systems which were bought by the government for millions of dollars, and within a few minutes they show honkin' huge holes in the systems. Some of these systems do not even have password protection to the databases which store the count of votes. They show the most basic bugs and simplest hacks by which election results could be completely manipulated and changed. All this is done right in front of our eyes, on film. And this is the silly system which is used to elect local politicians to national ones, including the US President himself. This is the system which influences the fate of an entire nation, nay, nations, and changes the course of history itself!

It is amazing! I have spent the entire 10 years of my career taking care of software systems for American companies, systems which process people's monies, which do hundreds of thousands of financial transactions involving thousands of millions of dollars. I have seen how these systems account for every single cent of the thousands of millions of dollars they process. The transactions can be anything from simple arithmetic to complex billing and accounting, but not a single cent is lost. The only money that is usually lost in these systems is the money not paid by customers who go bankrupt or cannot be traced. Even this money is not technically lost. It is well-accounted for upto the last cent, collection actions are initiated and it is written-off only when it is deemed to be unrecoverable. These software systems are built by relatively modest teams, in the IT departments of American companies, and the vendors from whom they source their software systems and services. Countless such systems are used by banks and businesses across the country, quietly and efficiently processing mind-boggling amounts daily. I find it to be truly amazing that the world's greatest democracy is not able to get sufficiently robust and reliable systems to do the simple yet most important task of recording and tallying its votes.

The last two presidential elections in the US were controversial because of this very reason. There are many people who believe that George W Bush never truly won either election. Despite the questions and controversies hanging over the election of the president himself, not much has been done to improve the voting situation. As this documentary shows clearly, the system continues to be rotten. Is it because of corruption or the lack of political will? Or the fact that the general public is not very savvy about the whole issue? It is very important that every American watche this documentary and take action to ensure that his/her vote is recorded and counted right, and does not get thrown in the garbage or lost in the holes of half-baked computer systems.

Shoot the Harassers

One way that people in New York City are reacting to being harassed is by shooting the harassers... with a camera. Then, they send the photos to Holla Back New York City for the whole world to see!

Many of the photos are posted with text by the women who got harassed. It is evident that the act of doing something to get back at the harassers, even it is to merely pull out the cellphone camera and shoot a picture, seems to immediately make the women feel better. They seem to regain their sense of personal power and confidence during or soon after the incident.

There are chances of genuine misunderstanding or real abuse of this facility by some woman, of course. But hey, whatever works!

Wondering if this would work for eve-teasers and their victims in India...

Sexist World - 2

This was an interesting reminder of what of kind of a sexist world we live in. Last Thursday, the radio station 104.7 KISS FM, broadcasting out of Phoenix, was annoucing a night out for "naughty moms" at a local bar and restaurant. They wanted female listeners to call in and tell them why or how they are "naughty moms". The listeners who called in would then get a pass to the "naughty moms" party or drink tickets or whatever!

Quite a few ladies called in to say how or why they were naughty moms: one was sleeping with her husband's best friend; another was having simultaneous affairs with her husband's friend and her husband's cousin; yet another slept (separately, at different times) with her husband's brother and her husband on his birthday, conceived a child and now did not know if the father of the child was her husband or his brother. She said that even a DNA test could not tell who the father is because the two guys in question are brothers! Apparently, for these ladies, being a "naughty mom" meant cheating on the dad. And the way they called in to talk about their cheating episodes... it was almost as if they were proud of it!

But the interesting part of this whole exercize is that, the radio station was throwing a party for these moms, because they cheated. These ladies were appreciated because they cheated. It was a celebration of cheating women! And later in the evening, when the party was on, the RJ's urged listeners to drop in at the party because things were "getting wild". So, not only do these cheating women have a party thrown for them, but they even have a radio station sending more meat to their party so that they can cheat some more!

Amazing! I mean, can you imagine something like this being done for cheating guys? A party for "player dads", perhaps? How many ladies would attend that party? How many people would even find the idea of such a party acceptable? Something like that would never happen.

Damn! And women think they don't have it good, and guys get to enjoy everything in the sexist world!

Sexual Harassment and Power

I usually have frustrating exchanges with women whenever power is mentioned in the context of sexual harassment... specifically, sexual harassment of women by men. The discussion in the comments section of my blog post about the root cause of eve teasing in India is an example. Women, especially the feminist types, believe that sexual harassment is mainly about power, and less about sex. Some of them even claim that it is all about power and not at all about sex.

This is frustrating for me because I am a man. As such, I understand how the male libido works. I am not a rapist nor have I sexually harassed anyone. Nevertheless, I understand what goes on in the mind and loins of a guy vis-a-vis sex. So, I know what I am talking about when I say that the primary motivation for most men who are guilty of sexual harassment is sex.

This is when women like to ask questions such as: Why would a married man who has free access to a sexual partner, still harass some other woman? Or, why would a man, who could easily buy sexual gratification from a prostitute, risk everything to commit violent rape instead?

Clearly, there is a lack of understanding of male sexuality. The reason why I keep coming back to the "power and sex" discussion is because I feel that women's beliefs about the role of power in male sexuality further distorts their understanding. Thus, women totally miss out on understanding the root cause and the motivation behind male sexual acts... whether they are acts of harassment or acts of shared pleasure.

For the record, through this blog post, I want to clarify my position on sexual harassment and power in as simple terms as possible. So, here goes: Sexual desire is the root cause and primary motivation for sexual harassment. Power enables or allows harassment to happen. Power is only an enabler, a facilitator. Sexual desire is the root cause.

To give an analogy: The primary reason for humans to eat chicken is not that they are more powerful than the chicken. The primary reason is that humans feel hunger. The fact that humans are more powerful than the chicken enables or allows them to eat chicken. But that is not the root cause for chicken being part of the human diet.

Now, one may ask, why should humans violently kill and eat chicken, while they could easily eat vegetables, which involves less violence and gore. There are a different set of reasons for that. That is a different line of discussion. But we know that it is certainly not because there is more power in eating chicken than in eating a vegetable.

It is important for us to discern and understand this truth. If we don't understand the truth, our efforts and energies will be directed at the wrong things. For example, if we believe that sexual harassment is all about power, we will conclude that empowering women will stop sexual harassment. I don't think it will. Empowering women will help curb sexual harassment, but it is only a matter of time and place before the woman will be vulnerable and a possible target. No one can be powerful at all times.

Having said all that, I want to reiterate that I am not totally dismissing the power factor from the sexual harassment equation. Not only is power an enabler of harassment, power (or rather the feeling of powerlessness) also happens to be the most important, overwhelming and enduring experience of sexual harassment for the victim. From the victim's perspective, the harassment is not a sexual experience. It is an experience of total vulnerability and powerlessness!

Consider a woman who has been raped. Physical violence and humiliation are big aspects of her experience. However, the biggest aspect is the feeling of being utterly powerless and helpless. It is like a stranger, or someone you know and thought you could trust, came up to you, helped himself to a piece of your soul, and simply walked away. There was nothing you could do to stop it, before or while it was happened. And so often, there is nothing you can do after it has happened. Even catching and punishing the perpetrator, only helps the woman's feeling of powerlessness in a very small way. The feeling of total weakness and powerlessness, wherein any asshole could just drop by and violate her body and soul intimately, is something that endures for a long time.

Yes, from the victim's perspective, the overwhelming and most enduring experience of sexual harassment is the utter feeling of powerlessness. It is important to understand this because this understanding is more useful in the healing of a victim, than in the prevention of such crimes. Yes, empowering women will help curb harassment to a little extent, but it is not the panacea for harassment prevention. The role of empowerment is much more in the healing of a harassed victim.

Empowering a harassment victim and specific steps/measures to make her feel empowered, should be the most important part of any healing process. Catching, punishing and preventing the perpetrator from repeating the crime play an important role in restoring the victim's confidence. On the other hand, if the criminal gets away scot-free, it contributes to her feeling of helplessness. However, justice alone is not enough to heal her. Real healing starts when the lady is empowered enough to feel safe again, to feel that she will not be violated again. It is through such empowerment that the lady starts to feel like a living human being again, instead of like a powerless object. It is through such empowerment that she starts to value herself again, to feel that life may be live-able and then to grow to feel that life is worth living after all.

I hope this blog post has helped people understand what I have been saying all along about sexual harassment and power. Not only has this been written from a man's understanding of male sexuality and power, this is also written from an empathic understanding of sexual harassment by being close to a victim, from sharing the deeply painful feeling of powerlessness. I hope this understanding contributes to better prevention and healing of sexual harassment.

To Stay or Not to Stay

Like many Indians who live and work in the US, I am often faced with circumstances and choices which make me wonder if I should continue staying in the US or if I should return back to India.

Following is an attempt to list my reasons to stay in the US and to not stay in the US. This list is not complete. I shall add more reasons as and when I think of them. If you think of some additional reasons, please add them in the comments.

Reasons to stay in the US:
  • Higher pay. Even in comparative standard-of-living terms (as opposed to absolute pay terms), Indian pay does not match.

  • Infrastructure & facilities in US vs in India. Higher comfort and ease for anything and everything material.

  • Travel opportunities in US and other places.

  • Polluted and dirty urban living and travel conditions in India.

  • The US's extremely low Extrinsic Obstacles Index (EOI) for education, career and fun, compared to India's extremely high EOI.

Reasons to NOT stay in the US:
  • Family & friends in India.

  • Food. Mother's Cooking.

  • Festivals in India.

  • Travel opportunities in India.

  • Cultural & social experiences of India.

  • Thrills of being in the one of the most "happening" countries of the world.

  • Experience of participating in the current phase of India's accelerated modernization.

  • Exponentially increased opportunities to network with others of my own kind (Indian, young, passionate, techie) due to the fast-growing Internet connectivity in India.

  • Missing the company of others of my own kind (Indian, young, passionate, techie). At this point (Mar 2006), I feel extremely lonely in the US. For some reason, I have just not been able to find very many people here in AZ, with whom I could enjoy great friendship and companionship.

More to be added whenever...

Workplace Name Calling

In the old days (before I was born?) the respectful way to address superiors and co-workers was to use their last name. This started to change in the late 80s and 90s, especially in the technology industry, with everybody, at all levels in the organization addressing each other by first names. This change happened well before I started my career. So, I have always addressed coworkers and superiors by their first names.

Today I realized just how much this practice has become ingrained in us: I noticed an email I had sent yesterday to my boss's boss, which started by addressing him by his last name. I have spent all morning wondering if that mail sounds disrespectful and if I should send out a clarification.

I was surprised to discover what I had done and am still not able to understand how/why I did it. It was most probably because our email system displays people's last names first, and I had just entered his last name in the address field of the email. So, his last name was stuck on my mind when I began the body of the email.

I thought it was funny that today I am feeling awkward over something which would have been the norm only a couple of decades ago - to address a superior at the work place by his last name. I think I will just let this pass and won't send any clarifications.
